Face mists has been the rave for the past few years and as we see that the ‘main’ ingredient is H2O , we at Pure Water decided to do some research on this beauty tip.
According to science, we’ve been making a major mistake when it comes to attacking dry and damaged skin. We have spent years turning to expensive beauty products endorsed by celebrities in an attempt to keep our skin youthful & supple. When the creams, lotions & serums fail to deliver, we then move on to the next thing. We drift from steam humidifiers to customised essences, from scrubs and mists to moisturising makeup, all in the perpetual pursuit of hydration.
But according to a group of Japanese scientists, we have got is all wrong! A Skin Research and Technology study, released today, has found that we need just one ingredient to achieve beautiful, hydrated skin.
–> Water
The study, conducted at Aichi Medical University in Japan, examined the faces of 17 healthy adult women, aged between 30 and 46. Each woman’s face was sprayed with a fine mist of water, under conditions similar to winter, when our skin is at its driest.
My first reaction to those Evian Facial Mist cans was always to laugh – why bother spraying water on my face when this faucet over here can accomplish the same thing?
Of course, when I look at the price – more than RM15 for just 200ml of pure H2O just doesn’t sit well with me. However, the results of this study might have convinced me. Following a good misting with tiny water particles, scientists observed that the women’s moisture levels and elasticity dramatically improved. “In addition, water retention function remained constant at 360 minutes after spraying,” the study found.
The method of “watering” your face is also important to consider. Dunking your head under running water or under the shower will certainly get you wet, but it will not provide the penetration you need to really hydrate your skin.
Only through using something like a misting bottle (or nano mist bottle), water is separated into small particles with a tiny diameter, allowing the H2O to “pass through the gaps” between skin cells and layers. This increases the water content in the skin, repairing dry areas and softening overall.
The study also recommended using “non-charged water particles” to spritz your visage. This plays an important role in maintaining the moisture in your skin. Our tap water contains inorganic minerals (iron, magnesium, etc) and chemicals (especially the dreaded chlorine) – which actually drys out our skin. That tightness feeling after a face wash is usually caused by the chlorine in the water.
So ditch the tap water and invest in a jug of distilled water for your spritz routine. Distilled water has been stripped of contaminants and minerals so it’s even better for your skin. Distilled water is very pure, without salts or impurities (especially the drying chemical like the chlorine!), and it’s used for most cosmetics, surgeries, and machines to prevent corrosion. It is a wonder how distilled water is used maintain & cleaning of high precision machines but we don’t use it for ourselves!
Here’s a simple DIY Hydrating Face Mist Spray – You really only need to invest in a nano sprayer that cost less than RM10 and distilled water (you only need 100ml). A bottle of face mist spray can last your a few days!
